This is the first installment of a new paid series where I share what I’m actually shopping for, saving, buying, and styling in real time. I am thinking they mostly focus on my favorite treasure hunt- vintage. Those truly special, one-of-a-kind pieces that bring personality (and longevity) into a wardrobe. The first find is available to everyone, and the rest will live behind the paywall.
For installment one, I’m starting with a category I reach for constantly: vintage dusters, lightweight silk robes, and jacket-like layering pieces. Easy, elegant, and surprisingly versatile. The lightweight jacket is an instant value add to a top and bottom. In styling, it is what I always called the “third piece.”
The “third piece” is the mvp that most people forget to add to their outfit, (which is unfortunate), because, it is what makes the outfit interesting. Take jeans and a teeshirt for instance, the third piece is the belt, the sweater wrapped around your shoulders, the hat or the necklace (or all 4 of those items combined). The third piece is that additional layer that makes your outfit more thoughtful, layered and memorable. In my opinion, the layers are what define style.
